Match of the Week
Anglia Television Football Highlights
1962-83
Encouraged by Ipswich Town's league title winning
campaign of 1961/62, the three year old Anglia Television service reached
a special agreement with the Football League to begin screening a highlights
programme* during the 1962/63 season, thus Anglia became the first ITV
station to broadcast regular weekly coverage of League football. The fee
was just £1,000 for exclusive rights to 30 games that season involving
four East Anglian clubs. The first match screened was Ipswich Town 2 Wolverhampton
Wanderers 3. Len Caynes, who went on to become a Match of the Week
director and then Anglia's 'Head of Sport', was a cameraman at that match
along with Stuart McConahie, later editor of ITV's World of Sport. Caynes
recalled; "Everyone on the outside broadcast crew at that time was crazy
about football. We couldn't believe our luck, getting paid for watching
football - something we would have been doing anyway." The regular director
in the 1960's was Bob Gardam who went on to direct The Big Match,
one of the camera positions at Wembley later became known as "Gardam's
Pit".
*The original shows were around 30 minutes in length.
The Anglia region's league teams
Ipswich Town*, Norwich City*, Peterborough United*,
Colchester United*, Northampton Town and Cambridge United. Luton Town were
shared with LWT, Southend United were shared with Southern/TVS. From 1965-1974
Anglia also covered Hull City, Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United and Lincoln
City**.
*Ipswich, Norwich, Peterborough
and Colchester were the four clubs who Anglia initially covered in the
early days.
**The addition of two new transmitters
(Sandy Heath and Belmont) in 1965 expanded Anglia's choice of league clubs
to 11 and then Cambridge United were elected into the league in 1970, but
the four Belmont teams (Hull, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Lincoln) were lost
to Yorkshire Television when Belmont was switched over to YTV on 1st January
1974. Luton Town were often paid a visit by London Weekend Television cameras
as many homes around the Luton area received their TV pictures from London
as well as, or instead of, those from Anglia.
Anglia commentators
August 1962 - Early 1967
Match Of The Week's regular commentator
in the early years was pipe-smoking John Camkin, a former newspaper sports
writer who had also covered football for the BBC. Camkin served as a director
at Coventry City and was secretary of the League Managers Association as
well as writing several books on the game. He was the son of Bill Camkin
who had managed Birmingham City during World War II.
Dec 1966 - May 1969
36 year old Gerald Sinstadt joined Anglia in
1966 having previously worked for BBC Radio, but he was poached by Granada
for the start of 1969/70. See the Granada
page for further details.
August 1969 - 1993
Former Army second lieutenant and Daily Express
war correspondent Gerry Harrison became Anglia's voice of football for
24 years (during which he was also picked for ITV's World Cup commentary
team for all tournaments played from 1970-1990), he had been the runner-up
in BBC Television's 1969 "Find a commentator" competition (won by Idwal
Robling). Harrison later became Anglia's 'Head of sport' but left the station
in 1993 to take a job producing worldwide football coverage for an American
owned TV company (citing ITV's losing out to SKY and the BBC in the soccer
rights war as the main reason for his move).
Presenters
Michael Parkinson was briefly at Anglia in the
late 1960's and may have presented Match of the Week during that
time. Steve Rider joined Anglia at the age of 27 in 1979, he was a reporter
on the programme and later left for the BBC in 1984 where he presented
Grandstand.
What matches were shown
The following lists detail all the matches recorded by Anglia cameras
for local highlights, the re-edits of other region's matches are
not included here (see the other region's pages for those). Given dates
are for when the fixture was played (not the broadcast). Blanks* denote
that we don't know what game was shown (if one was shown at all), winter
postponements may have forced Anglia to occasionally schedule an alternate
non-football programme. Known mid-week & pre-season East England based
matches (not necessarily aired under the title
Match of the Week)
are included in grey, networked ITV coverage of other matches of interest
are in italics.
*Do please e-mail [email protected] if you are able to fill in any blanks/missing scorers.

The first season of Match of the
Week saw the show cover Ipswich Town, Norwich City, Peterborough United
and Colchester United, along with Bedford Town and Cambridge United who
were playing outside the league in the Southern League Premier Division.
Ipswich, who as defending League Champions in Alf Ramseys final season
before he took over the England job, finished in 17th place just four points
above relegated Manchester City. Norwich City (whose Manager George Swindin
left in November after only taking over the previous summer and was replaced
by player Ron Ashman) finished in mid-table in the 2nd tier. Peterborough
United had a good season in the 3rd tier finishing in 6th place, whilst
Colchester United had a 12th placed finish.

It was not a memorable season for any of the four Anglia clubs as Ipswich (now under the management of Newcastle legend Jackie Milburn) had an awful season finishing bottom of the old Division One. 2nd tier Norwich City's final tally was only three points clear of relegation, whilst in the Division below both Peterborough and Colchester were mid-table.

With Norwich and Ipswich now in the same division (2nd tier) Match of the Week was able to show its first derby match on September 5th 1964 which Norwich won 2-1 at Carrow Road. Milburn was sacked soon afterwards and replaced by Watford Manager Bill McGarry. Both sides went on to have good season's with Ipswich finishing just above their rivals on goal average in 5th place. Peterborough finished 8th in Division Three, but reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup knocking out Arsenal 2-1 in the fourth round, before going out 5-1 at Chelsea. Unfortunately none of this action was shown on TV as neither ITV or the BBC were allowed to show FA Cup highlights other than of the final. Colchester had a poor season and were relegated to the 4th Division in 23rd place.
Season 1965/66
There was a dispute between
the Football League and the TV companies at the beginning of this season,
highlights returned to BBC2 on 02/Oct and to ITV channels a week later.

The addition of two new transmitters at Sandy Heath (covering Bedfordshire) and Belmont (Lincolnshire) gave Anglia access to several new clubs. One of these was Northampton Town who enjoyed this one season in the top flight before being relegated. Ipswich and Norwich both finished mid-table in the 2nd tier, the Canaries reached the 5th round of the FA Cup but this was not enough to save manager Ron Ashman who was sacked at the end of the season. Another new Anglia team Hull City had a very successful season - champions of the 3rd tier as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup before going out 3-1 to Chelsea in a home replay. Scunthorpe United finished 4th but were twelve points adrift of promotion, other new boys Grimsby Town finished in mid-table but their first TV action saw them beat Hull 1-0 in April. Peterborough United finished just a point below Grimsby but reached the semi-final of the League cup losing out 6-3 to West Bromwich Albion on aggregate. Colchester regained their 3rd tier status at the first attempt but only thanks to a better goal average than Tranmere Rovers and (another new Anglia club) Luton Town. The final new club Lincoln City finished third from bottom and had to go through re-election.

Ipswich were this season's highest placed Anglia team reaching 5th place in the 2nd tier, but it was Norwich (now under the management of Lol Morgan) who took most of the headlines. An improving 11th placed finish in the league was eclipsed by a 2-1 win the FA Cup 4th round at Manchester United who would go and win the league title, this game was covered by Anglia with cameras outside of the region of the first time. Hull City, following promotion, finished one place below Norwich whilst Northampton, who reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup, suffered a second successive relegation. All four 3rd tier Anglia clubs finished within four points of each other in the bottom half of the table, Colchester United, Peterborough united, Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United. In Division Four, Luton Town finished just four points clear of re-election whilst Lincoln City were rock bottom.

It was a great season for Ipswich Town as they were finally promoted back into the top tier of English football after a five year gap as champions. Norwich City improved again with a 9th placed finish, whilst Hull City struggled all season but managed to stay up in 17th (six points clear of the drop). In the Third tier, it was Peterborough United who took all the headlines for the wrong reasons, they finished 9th but where deducted 19 points and relegated after being found guilty of paying players illegal bonus fees. Northampton town stopped their decline with a 18th place finish, but it was three other local sides that joined Peterborough in the bottom tier, Grimsby Town, Colchester United and Scunthorpe United (the Irons having appointed former Norwich Boss Ron Ashman). Luton Town, under Allan Brown, finished as runaway Champions of the Fourth division whilst Lincoln City had an improved mid-table finish.

Back with the elite, Ipswich comfortably stayed up but suffered a big blow when Bill McGarry left to join Wolves in November, his replacement was Bobby Robson who had just been sacked by Fulham. In the 2nd tier Hull finished 10th and Norwich City finished 12th with Lol Morgan sacked at the end of the season. Another side who had a change in dug-out was Luton Town who bizarrely sacked Allan Brown in December (with the team in the top four of Division Three) for showing an interest in the Wolves and Leicester jobs, he was replaced former QPR manager Alec Stock and the Hatters went on to miss out on a second successive promotion by three points to arch rivals Watford. Northampton Town dropped in the bottom tier by just a point from safety. There was not much success in the 4th tier with Colchester United the highest placed club in 6th place, whilst fringe Anglia team Southend United and Lincoln City finished just below. Scunthorpe United and Peterborough United both finished in lower mid-table with Grimsby Town having to apply for re-election.

Bobby Robsons first full season in charge at Ipswich saw a battle against the drop but they managed to stay up finishing 18th as Robson began to re-build the team. Norwich City, now under Ron Saunders, were again mid-table in 11th, just below them were Hull City who appointed 28 year-old Arsenal player Terry Neill as player-manager to replace the long serving Cliff Britton at the end of the season. Luton Town were promoted into the 2nd tier as runners-up with 25 goals of their league goals scored by Malcom Macdonald. It was the region's lower league sides made an impact in the FA Cup this year with both Scunthorpe and Northampton reaching the last sixteen despite mid-table finishes in the league. Scunthorpe caused a major upset in front of the Anglia cameras knocking out top flight Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Hillsborough before going out by the same score at 2nd tier Swindon. Northampton's run was ended by Manchester United and George Best who scored six times as they won 8-2 in one of Bests most famous performances. In the 4th tier Lincoln City, Peterborough United and Colchester United all finished in the top half, with Grimsby Town and Southend United narrowly avoiding re-election.

It was not a good season for Bobby Robson and Ipswich Town as they struggled to a 19th placed finish. Hull City, under Terry Neill, enjoyed an excellent campaign reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals (going out 3-2 at home to Stoke City) and finishing only five points from promotion. Luton Town, newly promoted weere just behind and Malcom Macdonald netted 24 more league goals, whilst Norwich City had yet another mid-table season in 11th. Colchester United also reached the last eight of the FA Cup, as a bottom tier club they knocked out the mighty Leeds United at Layer Road in one of the most famous giant-killings of all time (shown on the BBC) thanks in part to Ray Crawford who had been a part of the Ipswich Town title winning side almost a decade earlier, Colchester also just missed out on promotion by two points, Northampton Town were just behind in 7th place. The rest of the Anglia clubs where all clustered in the bottom half of the table; Lincoln City had to apply for re-election, Cambridge United - in their first season in the Football league - finished four points above them.

Ipswich Town had an improved season finishing in 13th place, but their progress was over-shadowed by Norwich City who under Ron Saunders burst from a decade of mid-table obscurity to claim the 2nd tier title, they also reached the Quarter-finals of the League Cup. Both Hull City and Luton Town slipped down the table, and at the end of the season the Luton manager Alec Stock resigned. It was a good year for the region's 4th tier clubs; Grimsby Town won the league title on the final day of the season in-front of the Match of the Week cameras with a 3-2 win over Peterborough United who just missed out on promotion themselves, although they did have the divisions top scorer in Paul Price who hit 28 goals. Southend United were visited by Anglia for the first time in November for their 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the 1st Round of the FA Cup and went on to win promotion as runners-up, whilst Ron Ashmans Scunthorpe United (who had sold Kevin Keegan to Liverpool the previous summer) piped local rivals Lincoln city to the final promotion spot by a point. Cambridge United and Colchester United were locked together in mid-table whilst Northampton Town were forced to apply for re-election.

Ipswich Town made a sudden return to prominence in the English game finishing in 4th place, their highest since winning the title in 1962, and it was enough to qualify them for the UEFA Cup. Norwich City quickly adapted to life amongst the elite and, after Anglia covered the 2-0 win over West Brom on November 18th, City sat 6th in the table, but then disaster struck as they then failed to win another league game until mid April, but two further wins over fellow strugglers West Brom and Crystal Palace in the space of four days saved them from the drop. The other high point was their first visit to Wembley in the League Cup final but they lost 1-0 to Spurs. 2nd tier clubs Luton Town and Hull City had almost identical season's as the previous year with lower mid-table finishes. Grimsby Town adapted well to 3rd tier football and finished in 9th place with Southend United four points below them, but Scunthorpe United ended the season in bottom place and were relegated straight back down, Cambridge United were among those replacing them as they finished in 3rd in the Fourth Division. Lincoln City - who had appointed Graham Taylor as their new Manager in December - finished 10th, Peterborough United finished 6th from bottom, but better than Colchester united (now managed by Former Boston United Manager Jim Smith) and Northampton Town who both had to re-apply for re-election.

Ipswich Towns reward for the previous 4th placed finish was European football, and they soon proved a liking for foreign adventures by knocking out Real Madrid in the UEFA Cup 1st Round, they went on to reach the QF's (losing on pens to Lokomotiv Leipzig) and again achieved a 4th place league finish with Kevin Beattie winnning the first ever PFA 'Young player of the year' award. At Carrow Road there was a change of manger as Ron Saunders walked out of Norwich in November over criticism of his style of play, he was replaced by the out-spoken boss of AFC Bournemouth John Bond who signed several players from Dean Court in the process of breaking up Saunders' team, Bond took the Canaries to the League Cup semi-final but were defeated 1-0 in the second leg and he could not prevent a drop back to the second tier. Promoted as runners-up were Luton Town under Harry Haslam, the Hatters could now look forward to top flight football at Kenilworth Road for the first time since 1960. In the North of the region, the loss of the Belmont transmitter to Yorkshire Television on the 1st January 1974 meant four less clubs for Anglia to cover including Hull who finished in 9th place (but they were still shown a couple more times after the switch) whilst Third Division Grimsby Town ended their Anglia status just missing out on promotion in 6th, the final two departing Anglia sides, Lincoln and Scunthorpe, finished mid-table in the basement. Southend United finished in mid-table in the 3rd tier, Cambridge United lasted just one season at this level and were relegated. In the Fourth Division it was a good season for the region as Noel Cantwell's Peterborough United stormed to the title whilst Colchester United where promoted with them in 3rd, Northampton Town just missed out in 5th.

Ipswich went for the double and just missed out in both the League and the FA Cup, they were just two points adrift of champions Derby County and finished 3rd, whilst in the FA Cup they reached the semi-final after knocking out Wolves, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Leeds United (after a four game quarter-final) before going out 2-1 in the replay of the semi-final against West Ham United at Stamford Bridge in which the referee Clive Thomas disallowed two Ipswich goals. It was to be just a one season stint in the top flight for Luton Town as they were relegated two points short of safety. John Bond's Norwich bounced straight back up as they finished 3rd (three up, three down had been introduced the previous season). They also reached the League Cup final for a second time in three years and, after knocking out both Ipswich and Manchester United (also in the 2nd tier for a season), they faced Ron Saunders and Aston Villa in an all 2nd tier final but they again lost 1-0. Peterborough United had a good season back in the Third tier finishing 7th, Colchester United finished mid-table whilst Southend United just avoided the drop in 18th. Cambridge United, under new Manager Ron Atkinson, just missed out on promotion finishing four points short, whilst Northampton Town finished in the bottom half.

Ipswich slipped back this season to 6th place, whilst newly promoted Norwich defied most people's expectations that they would be relegated, finishing 10th (only 4 points behind Ipswich) and boasting the top flight's leading scorer in Ted MacDougall with 23 goals. The only blot on the season at Carrow Road was a shock 2-1 home defeat to 4th tier Bradford City in the 5th round of the FA Cup. Lutons hopes of bouncing straight back into the top flight were not fulfilled as they finished in 7th place. In the 3rd tier, Peterborough finished 10th, but it was a bad season for the two Essex clubs, Colchester and Southend were both relegated. Northampton came up the other way as they finished runners-up in the Fourth Division, their two home Match of the Week appearances saw them score eleven goals without reply. Cambridge United finished 13th.

Ipswich rose back up the table to again to become genuine title contenders, but like two years before could finally only finish in 3rd place behind Liverpool and Manchester City. Norwich struggled but managed to hang onto their top flight status by just 3 points, finishing in 16th place. Luton Town finished 6th having been in the promotion hunt all season, just 4 points behind the team in 3rd. Peterborough dropped to 16th whilst Northampton dropped straight back into the basement league. Coming up from the Fourth were both Cambridge (as champions) and Colchester United (in 3rd place) whilst Southend finished 10th.

It was a bizarre season for Ipswich as they won the FA Cup after beating Arsenal 1-0 in the final with a goal by Roger Osborne to become the first East Anglian club to win it, but in the league it was a very different story as they dropped down the table to finish 18th (their lowest since 1971) just 3 points above the relegated clubs. Norwich City finished 13th, almost loing manager John Bond in March to Birmingham City - but at the last moment he decided to stay at Carrow Road. A team that did lose their manager was 2nd tier Luton Town as Harry Haslam moved to Sheffield United in January, he was replaced by reserves manager David Pleat and they went on to finish 13th. Cambridge United made it two successive promotions by climbing out of the 3rd tier despite losing manager Ron Atkinson to West Bromwich Albion in December, his replacement John Docherty lead them to the runners-up spot, they were almost joined by Peterborough, but the Posh missed out on the final promotion place on goal difference. Colchester United were just 4 points behind in 8th place. Another Anglia team who had a good season was Southend who were promoted out of the bottom tier as runners-up behind Graham Taylors Watford. Both of Uniteds games against them where shown on TV with Match of the Week covering the home win in November, whilst Match of the Day covered the 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road in April. Northampton, now managed by former Watford manager Mike Keen, finished 10th.

Ipswich followed up their FA Cup win with a 6th placed finish in the league whilst Bobby Robson started to re-build the cup winning team, Brian Talbot was sold to Arsenal mid-season and Dutch pair Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijjsen were signed from Holland to become two of the first oversees players in the English game. The defence of the FA Cup was ended in the Quarter-finals by Liverpool (this game was due to be covered by Match of the Day but then the BBC was hit by a last minute strike, preventing coverage), there was also a run to the Quarter-finals of the Cup-Winners Cup where they where knocked out on away goals by Barcelona after Towns 2-1 victory at Portman Road was followed by a 1-0 defeat in the Nou Camp. Norwich City finished 16th, winning just seven league games all campaign, but 23 were drawn. Cambridge United held their own in the 2nd tier and finished 12th whilst Luton had a battle against relegation - finally finishing just 3 points above the drop. Colchester finished one place higher than the previous year in 7th, whilst Southend finished mid-table, but Peterborough United were relegated in 21st place. In the Fourth Division struggling Northampton finished sixth bottom.

Ipswich and Norwich had season's in reverse of each other - Norwich started the season very strongly and topped the summit of English football for the first time in August after three straight league wins. John Bond won the Manager of the Month award in September and his team were in the top five for most of the first part of the season, Ipswich on the other hand struggled around the bottom three until Christmas, but in the second half of the season the Canaries form dropped (which was not helped by the selling of Kevin Reeves to Manchester City for a Million pounds) and they finished in 12th place, whilst Ipswich raced up the table to finish 3rd again for a third time in just six seasons. Both teams also reached the Quarter-finals of domestic cup competitions. Norwich were beaten in the League Cup QF's 3-1 at home by Liverpool, whilst Ipswich lost 2-1 at Everton in the FA Cup. Luton made a serious bid for promotion but slipped up to finish four points short of the required tally in 6th. Only two places behind Luton were Cambridge United, their highest ever finish. Colchester almost made it into tier two, but they finished 5th whilst Southend were relegated after finishing 22nd. In the Fourth Division Peterborough finished 8th (eight points from promotion), Northampton improved to finish 13th.

Ipswich finished above all of the 'big boys' this season but were pipped to 1st place by Aston Villa, Town were also denied a place at the FA Cup final at the last hurdle by Manchester City, but there was European glory for Ipswich in the UEFA Cup in a 2 leg final v Dutch outfit AZ 67 Alkmaar, Town won 5-4 on aggregate having knocked out St.Etienne and Cologne in the QF's and Semi's, Frans Thijssen was named 'Footballer of the year' and John Wark was the PFA's 'Player of the year'. So a terrific season for Ipswich, but disaster for Norwich as a six season stint in the top flight came to an end with the Canaries relegated as the 3rd bottom club, this despite a contribution of 19 league goals from teenage sensation Justin Fahanu. In the 2nd tier Luton finished 5th (Brian Stein scoring 18), Cambridge 13th. Colchester United were relegated to the 4th tier swapping places with Dave Smith's Southend United who went up as champions, Peterborough narrowly missed out on promotion in 5th with 22 goals from Robbie Cooke, Northampton trailed behind in 10th.

A very successful season for the region's top three clubs - Ipswich Town's defence of the UEFA Cup came to an abrupt end in the 1st round to Aberdeen but they again finished the season as runners-up (Alan Brazil netting 22 league goals and John Wark 18) and reached the Semi-finals of the League Cup whilst Luton and Norwich both won promotion from the 2nd tier, Brian Stein's 21 goals helping David Pleat's Hatters to finish as champions with Ken Brown's Norwich in 3rd. Cambridge meanwhile finished 14th. In the 3rd tier, Southend finished 7th. Down in the 4th tier, Peterborough were once again one place short of promotion in 5th with Robbie Cooke scoring 24, Colchester were 6th, Northampton had to apply for re-election in 22nd.

A memorable season for Luton who retained top flight status thanks to a final day away win at Manchester City (which sent the Sky Blues down), striker Paul Walsh was jointly named 'PFA Young player of the year' with Liverpool's Ian Rush. Norwich comfortably held on to their place among the elite in 14th with 20 of their goals scored by John Deehan, but it was a disappointing season for Ipswich having lost manager Bobby Robson to the England post in July 1982, first team coach Bobby Ferguson took over but having qualified for the UEFA Cup they again exited at the 1st round stage (this time to Roma) and Ipswich went on to finish 9th in the league, their lowest in 5 season's. On a brighter note for Ipswich, striker John Wark matched John Deehan's tally of 20 goals. Cambridge lived to fight another season in the 2nd tier - mid-table again in 12th. Southend were 15th in the 3rd tier, and in the 4th tier Colchester once again ended the campaign in 6th with 22 goals from Ian Allinson, Peterborough were 9th and Northampton 15th.
