*ABC Television had provided a weekend commercial service for both the Midlands and North from 1956 - July 1968, they began producing a football highlights show called World of Soccer with Gerry Loftus around 1966, presumably Yorkshire clubs were featured from time to time.
The Yorkshire region's teams
1968-1983
YTV's football coverage quickly became synonymous
with Don Revie's Leeds United who were arguably the best side in the entire
country until well into the mid-1970's. In stark contrast to Leeds, the
region's other top clubs Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Huddersfield
Town would all sink into the 3rd tier for the first time in their respective
histories, the latter pair even spent time in the 4th, yet all three still
enjoyed their success stories and each played their part in making YTV
football history (promotion was not something Leeds were able to celebrate
in those days).
Many of the region's other clubs also enjoyed
the good times, none more so than Hull City who spent more than a decade
in the 2nd tier, briefly to be joined by Mansfield Town for one single
season before both were relegated in 1978. Rotherham United and Barnsley
then had their turn competing in the upper echelons of the football league
after achieving promotion together in 1981.
Sadly the region lost one of its' league members
in 1970 when Bradford Park Avenue failed to gain re-election following
a succession of calamitous campaigns at the foot of the 4th division (the
one Park Avenue match known to have been covered by YTV on 21/Dec/1968
survives in the archives). Becoming the only club in town had no positive
effect on Bradford City who, after relegation in 1972, languished in the
4th division for 9 of the next 10 season's. But the region was to add another
three league clubs to its' roster on 1st January 1974 when ITV signals
from the high powered Belmont transmitter in Lincolnshire began to relay
Yorkshire signals instead of those previously relayed from Anglia;* Grimsby
Town, Scunthorpe United and Lincoln City were all now YTV clubs whilst
the ITV regional preference of Hull City supporters no longer had to be
fought for.
Another club who YTV 'shared' was Middlesbrough
- Odd considering that the coverage area maps of the day suggest households
beyond Northallerton would have struggled to pull in satisfactory YTV signals,
whilst Middlebrough itself was clearly well within the Tyne Tees boundary**,
yet ITV stations were competing to maximize advertising potential in fringe/overlap
areas and, as Middlesbrough was still in the county of North Yorkshire
in 1968, there was enough of an excuse to send YTV cameras to Ayresome
Park. York City too found themselves attracting the attention of both YTV
and Tyne Tees, especially after they won promotion to the 2nd tier in 1974.
Largely ignored over the years were Doncaster
Rovers, Halifax Town and Chesterfield who were unable to climb out of the
lower league's, although the Shaymen went close in 1971 as did the Spireites
in 1980. That same year saw Grimsby Town prove to be the most successful
'Belmont' acquisition when they were promoted as champions of the 3rd tier.
Sadly the final season of regular regional highlights in 1982/83 saw YTV
unable to cover a top flight club, Leeds United's glory days had very much
deserted them and it was Sheffield Wednesday who would soon be flying the
flag for the region at the highest level in a new era in which live coverage
superseded highlights.
*Anglia Television (based in Norwich)
continued to broadcast to a smaller region after relinquishing the Lincolnshire
mast to YTV. Some homes around the Chesterfield, Mansfield and Lincoln
areas received ATV/Central who would occasionally feature the clubs from
those towns on Star Soccer, but all three were primarily recognised
as YTV teams.
**In March 1971 a new high powered
transmitter (Bilsdale) positioned 20 miles south of Middlesbrough was added
to the growing family of colour TV masts. Some websites claim that this
mast was initially allocated to Yorkshire Television and then handed over
to Tyne Tees on 1st January 1974 - Others contest this claim, taking the
view that Bilsdale broadcast Tyne Tees signals from the start. As the reception
area of Bilsdale was almost identical to the southern shape of Tyne Tees's
long established black & white VHF territory, I would tend to agree
with the latter notion. Colour reception of Yorkshire Television was first
made available via the Emley Moor mast near Huddersfield on 15th November
1969 (Huddersfield v Portsmouth was presumably Yorkshire's first colour
match, although some earlier games were recorded in colour for test purposes).
Yorkshire football commentators
& presenters
The original YTV commentator was ex-professional
footballer Danny Blanchflower, a very fine player in his day with Barnsley,
Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur who had also captained Northern Ireland
to the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup in 1958, but it soon became obvious
to Yorkshire viewers that he wasn't so useful with the microphone as he
had been with the ball and by the end of the 1968/69 season YTV had 'let
him go'*. His replacement was Keith Macklin, already well known in the
region having appeared on BBC North as a newsreader during the first half
of the 1960's, YTV had possibly first employed his services as a Rugby
commentator (Macklin's favoured sport), nevertheless he became the voice
of Yorkshire football from 1969 until the early stages of the 1976/77 season
and he was also a member of the ITV commentary team that covered the 1974
World Cup in West Germany. Then came 31 year old Martin Tyler who had previously
worked behind the scenes on LWT's The Big Match before taking up
a place in the gantry on behalf of Southern Television. Whilst with Yorkshire,
Tyler commentated at the 1978 World Cup finals in Argentina and eventually
became recognised as the network's no.2 behind Brian Moore**. When Tyler
left YTV to join Granada for the start of 1981/82*** a 39 year old John
Helm took over, Helm was a born and bred Yorkshireman who had worked for
BBC Radio Leeds before joining the national BBC Radio Sports department,
his party piece was the ability to rattle through the names of all 92 league
clubs in record breaking time (around 26 seconds).
The main presenter of Yorkshire football highlights was Fred Dineage, chiefly associated outside the region with Southern TV's children's programme How, although he also popped up hosting the likes of World of Sport and Anglia's quiz show Gambit. Towards the end of regular regional highlights, ex-player Derek Dougan was employed by YTV as a post match summariser (Like Jimmy Greaves at ATV, Dougan had not served any club in the region in which he now worked, but this fact did at least grant him an air of impartiality). Dineage left YTV to present to TVS highlights in 1982 and, following the relegation of the region's last remaining top flight clubs, Yorkshire's football coverage was severely cut for the final season of regional highlights in 1982/83.
* Danny Blanchflower had first commentated
for CBS television in the USA on their National Professional Soccer League
games in 1967. Back in 1961 he became notorious for turning down an appearance
on the hugely popular TV show This is your life by walking away
from the host Eamon Andrews and his big red book (live on air) whilst protesting
"I consider this programme to be an invasion of privacy. Nobody is going
to press gang me into anything." He died in December 1993.
**In 2007 Martin Tyler was asked
for his most embarrassing moment, he recalled; "When an injury-stricken
player was being taken from the field, I noted that it was a 'sad sight
for Sheffield Wednesday fans'. Unfortunately, I inserted a stray H into
the second word."
What matches were shown
The following lists detail all the matches recorded
by Yorkshire Television cameras for local highlights, the re-edits
of other region's games are not included. Given dates are for when the
match was played (not the broadcast). Blanks* denote that we don't know
what game was shown (if one was shown at all), winter postponements may
have forced YTV to occasionally schedule an alternate non-football programme.
Known mid-week & pre-season Yorkshire based matches are included in
grey, networked ITV coverage of other matches of interest are in italics.
*Do please e-mail [email protected] if you are able to fill in any blanks/missing scorers.

Within their very first year covering the region's football, YTV were able to share in the glory of a top flight championship winning season as Leeds finished 1st (United's first ever league title at this level and they only lost 2 league games all season). Sheffield Wednesday, the region's only other old 1st division club, finished 15th. In the 2nd tier Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United both finished in the top half, as did fringe YTV area clubs Middlesbrough and Hull City (the latter were then shared with Anglia TV), the Tigers' Ken Wagstaff was runner-up in his league's goalscoring charts with 20. Doncaster Rovers, Halifax Town and Bradford City all won promotion from the 4th (Doncaster as champions under Lawrie McMenemy), but Bradford Park Avenue again ended the campaign rock bottom of the 92.

Billy Bremner was named 'Footballer of the year' but 1969/70 turned out to be a frustrating 'very nearly' season for his team Leeds United who were runners-up in both League and FA Cup and they also reached the Semi-finals of the European Cup (In which they were drawn to play Celtic, the first leg at Elland Road was covered by ITV - Leeds lost 1-0 to a goal scored in 40 seconds, the away leg was televised by the BBC - Leeds lost again, 2-1, in front of a crowd of 136,505 at Hampden). A disastrous campaign for Sheffield Wednesday saw them finish bottom, but all was not lost for the region as Huddersfield Town (managed by Ian Greaves) were crowned champions of the 2nd tier and so Yorkshire would still have two top flight clubs. Jimmy McGuigan's Chesterfield won the 4th division, but it was the end of the road for Bradford Park Avenue who finished bottom of the 92 for the third year running and were not re-elected in the vote (Cambridge United would take their place).

Leeds were runners-up again in the league but United did manage to win something this year when the 2 leg Fairs Cup final v Juventus was won on away goals (The original 1st leg in Turin was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch on 51 minutes with the score at 0-0, a replayed Italian leg saw Leeds come back home with a 2-2 draw, the 2nd leg at Elland Road finished 1-1). Huddersfield finished 15th in their first season back in the top flight since 1956. Hull City reached the Quarter-finals of the FA Cup but the region's big success story this season was John Harris's Sheffield United winning promotion to the top flight as runners-up. Halifax came close to reaching the 2nd tier for the first time ever by finishing 3rd (sadly only two clubs were promoted from that level in those days). Doncaster Rovers were relegated back down to the 4th, but one of the teams taking their place would be Tom Johnston's York City. 1970/71 was a good season for the region's strikers; Middlesbrough's John Hickton was the 2nd tier's top scorer with 25 goals, Hull's Chris Chilton wasn't far behind with 21 whilst in the other divisions, Paul Aimson of York notched up 26, Dudley Roberts of Mansfield netted 22 and Allan Clarke of Leeds and Kevin Randall of Chesterfield both scored 19.

Leeds were banned from playing their opening four home league matches at Elland Road following last season's pitch invasion v WBA (prompted by a controversial refereeing decision) and United finished 1971/72 as league runners-up for the third year in a row, but their season ended in glory with an FA Cup final victory over Arsenal, and who better to score the winning goal than Allan Clarke! Yet it was Peter Lorimer who finished as Leeds top scorer in the league this term with 23 goals. Sheffield United finished 10th in their first season back in the top flight (having topped the table early on), but it was not a good campaign for other clubs in the region as the grim reaper of relegation came knocking on the door of Huddersfield Town (who finished bottom of the top tier) as well as Mansfield, Barnsley and Bradford City (who all took the drop to the 4th).

Leeds slipped to 3rd position this time around and probably wished they hadn't reached a successive FA Cup final after 2nd tier Sunderland beat them 1-0 in one of the biggest cup final upsets of all time, Leeds were also losing finalists in the Cup-Winners Cup with AC Milan winning 1-0 (a BBC game). Sheffield United dropped to a final position of 14th in the top tier (Billy Dearden netting 20 league goals), Wednesday improved to 10th in the 2nd tier with Hull three places behind them. Despite Alan Gowling's 17 goals, Huddersfield Town finished up with a poorer goal average than Cardiff City which saw the Terriers slip into the bottom two after Cardiff picked up a point from a game-in-hand played after Town had finished their season, Huddersfield were relegated to the 3rd tier for the first time in their history. Rotherham United suffered the same cruel fate in the division below in which four clubs ended the season with 41 points - Among the three fortunates to survive with the same points total as the Millers were York and Halifax, the Shaymen saving themselves with a game-in-hand victory played after Rotherham had completed their fixtures.

1973/74 was a good season for the region; Leeds United - League champions! (Norman Hunter was named the PFA 'Player of the year'), fringe YTV club Middlesbrough (now managed by ex Leeds player Jack Charlton) were champions of the 2nd tier! York City - Promoted from the 3rd tier for the first time! And no Yorkshire club was relegated! Huddersfield's Alan Gowling was among the top scorers with 24 and the YTV region gained three new league clubs after the Belmont mast in Lincolnshire was switched over from Anglia to YTV on 1st January; In the 3rd tier Grimsby Town finished 6th whilst in the 4th division Lincoln City were 12th and Scunthorpe United 18th. There were managerial changes at the top however; Ken Furphy took charge of Sheffield United in December and Don Revie accepted the England job and left Leeds after the season's end in July.

It was a traumatic term for Leeds who finished 9th, easily their lowest position since winning promotion in 1964. New manager Brian Clough's rein lasted only 44 days before he was replaced by Jimmy Armfield, an FA Cup Quarter-final v Ipswich went to a 3rd replay which was lost, whilst a run in the European Cup took them all the way to the final (knocking out Barcelona in the semis) only for it to end in disaster in a match (shown live on the BBC) overshadowed by shocking refereeing decisions and crowd trouble, Leeds lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich and the mighty whites were banned from European competition for three years. Back home, in their return to the top flight, Middlesbrough finished 7th whilst Ken Furphy's Sheffield United were one place higher in 6th (their best finish in over a decade) but there was nothing but heartache for the blue & white half of Sheffield as the Owls finished bottom of the 2nd tier, a low point in their history which Huddersfield Town managed to outdo by ending the season bottom of the 3rd. There was brighter news from the 4th division as Mansfield Town (with 28 goals from Ray Clarke) were promoted as champions along with Rotherham United, Lincoln only just missed out on joining them. Scunthorpe finished rock bottom of the league but were re-elected.

Leeds improved on last season's disappointing league campaign by finishing 5th, Sheffield United made a terrible start to the season and Ken Furphy was sacked in October, his replacement was Jimmy Sirrel but he could not improve the Blades position and they were relegated. York and Halifax also suffered relegations from their respective leagues, but among the clubs replacing Halifax in the 3rd would be Graham Taylor's Lincoln City who were crowned champions of the 4th division with 47 of their 111 league goals scored by a striking partnership of John Ward and Percy Freeman, the Imps won a record breaking 32 of their 46 games and only lost 4. Lowly Bradford City enjoyed an FA Cup run to the Quarter-finals, winning away at Norwich in the 5th round before losing 1-0 at home to Southampton who went on to lift the trophy in May.

FA Cup semi-finalists Leeds dropped to 10th in this season's final table, two places ahead of FA Cup Quarter-finalists Middlesbrough who's manager Jack Charlton left at the end of the season hoping to take over the England job (which Don Revie had quit to coach in the Middle East). Mansfield Town (now managed by Peter Morris) won promotion to the 2nd tier for the first time in their history and claimed the 3rd tier league title in the process, Rotherham were unlucky not to join them by missing out on goal difference. It didn't make pretty reading for the region at the other end of the 3rd tier as Grimsby and York made up the bottom two, but there was joy for Bradford City who were promoted from the 4th. Barnsley's Brian Joicey was the basement division's leading scorer with 25, Doncaster's Peter Kitchen was runner-up with 23.

Leeds back down to 9th this season (Ray Hankin netted 20 league goals). Middlesbrough, now managed by John Neil, finished 14th and again lost in the FA Cup QF's (this time to Orient in a replay). It was bad news for the region in all other divisions - Both Mansfield Town and Hull City were relegated leaving only Sheffield United behind to represent YTV in the 2nd tier next term. Like Mansfield, Bradford City failed to cope with life in a higher division following promotion and were immediately relegated back down to the 4th. Jack Charlton, having failed to land the England job, took charge of Sheffield Wednesday who finished a disappointing 14th in the 3rd tier. Leeds parted company with manager Jimmy Armfield in the summer.

Jock Stein, considered by many to be the greatest British football manager of all time, was tempted south of the border to manage Leeds in August 1978, but his reign lasted just 45 days - Stein left Elland Road to take the Scotland job. Leeds replaced him with Jimmy Adamson (who'd turned down the England job in the '60s before it was given to Alf Ramsey). Leeds ended the season 5th, equalling their best finish since the Revie era and securing them a place in Europe. Elsewhere; Middlesbrough finished 12th and there was bad news in the 2nd tier - Sheffield United were relegated to the lower divisions for the first time in their history and the region would no longer be represented in the old Second Division. In the 3rd tier; Hull finished 8th with Keith Edwards netting 24 league goals, there was no sign of improvement for Sheffield Wednesday who again had to settle for 14th whilst Lincoln finished bottom. There was better news from the Fourth Division; Grimsby and Allan Clarke's Barnsley were both promoted, Barnsley's Derek Bell scored 21 including 3 for Halifax (who along with Doncaster had to apply for re-election).
Season 1979/80
All ITV regions (except Channel
TV) were taken off the air in early August 1979 due to a strike which lasted

Leeds return to European football saw them suffer a 2nd round UEFA Cup exit to Uni Craiova and they were nowhere near to qualifying for Europe again next season, finishing 11th. There was joy at last for Jack Charlton's Sheffield Wednesday, promoted after five season's in the old Third Division with Terry Curran top scorer at this level with 22 goals, yet it was George Kerr's Grimsby Town who emerged as the region's 2nd highest placed club as the Mariners were crowned champions of the 3rd tier. Making it a promotion triple for the region was Mick Buxton's Huddersfield Town who were champions of the Fourth Division with Ian Robins netting 25. Ronnie Glavin bagged 20 for 3rd tier Barnsley who finished ahead of Sheffield United in 12th. Ending on a sour note, Mansfield Town were relegated to the 4th.

Leeds made a very poor start to the season which cost manager Jimmy Adamson his job, he was replaced in October by Allan Clarke and Leeds went on to finish 9th. Both Grimsby and Sheffield Wednesday made a comfortable return to the 2nd tier finishing 7th and 10th, Andy McCulloch netted 18 goals for the Owls. Four of the top five clubs in the 3rd tier were from the YTV region; Ian Porterfield's Rotherham were champions (Ronnie Moore top scorer on 23) with Barnsley (now managed by Norman Hunter) runners-up, Huddersfield and Chesterfield just missed out on joining them on the up in 4th and 5th (Alan Birch grabbed 22 goals for the Spireites), but at the other end there was disaster for Sheffield United - they actually ended the season with a +3 goal difference (and had they gained two extra points they would have finished 15th) but the final table showed them in 21st and the Blades were relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time ever, they would be joined by Hull City who would also be playing in the 4th for the first time after finishing bottom. Coming up in the opposite direction would be Colin Murphy's Lincoln City and Billy Bremner's Doncaster Rovers, whilst at the foot of the Football League it was Halifax and York who made up the bottom two.

TV did NOT show the 1982 FA Cup final replay, they were the only ITV region
to opt out.
It was a shocking season for Leeds United who were relegated along with bottom club Middlesbrough, Leeds could have saved themselves had they won a post final-Saturday re-arranged fixture at WBA on May 18th, but they lost 2-0 and manager Allan Clarke then departed in the summer. In the 2nd tier, Sheffield Wednesday were close to winning promotion by finishing just one point behind the top three in 4th, Barnsley and Rotherham (in their first season following promotion from the 3rd tier) weren't far behind in 6th and 7th with the Millers now being managed by Emlyn Huges after Ian Porterfield had left in June 1981 to manage Fourth Division Sheffield United. Porterfield's Blades racked up a massive 96 points (this being the first season of 3 points for a win) to claim 1st place, they also scored 94 league goals with 36 of these courtesy of Keith Edwards (his being the highest tally in all leagues), Roy McFarland's Bradford City were also promoted from the 4th tier as runners-up with Bobby Campbell scoring 24.

Sheffield Wednesday were now officially the region's top team finishing 6th in the 2nd tier ahead of Leeds (now managed by Eddie Gray) in 8th, the Owls also reached the Semi-finals of the FA Cup but manager Jack Charlton resigned at the end of the season (returning to Middlesbrough for a brief spell before taking on the Newcastle job). Barnsley finished 10th, Middlesbrough were 16th and Grimsby just avoided the drop in 19th but Rotherham were relegated in 20th. In the 3rd tier; Mick Buxton's Huddersfield were promoted but Doncaster and Chesterfield were both relegated. Bobby Campbell was Bradford's top scorer again with 25, Derek Bell bagged 23 for Lincoln in 6th. In the 4th Division - Colin Appleton's Hull City and John Duncan's Scunthorpe United both won promotion with the Iron's Steve Cammack the division's leading scorer on 25.
