Subsequent Wembley appearances
Incredibly, Notts would make three further trips
to Wembley Stadium during the following five seasons; Two Anglo-Italian
Cup finals were reached in 1994 and 1995, the first of which was lost to
Brecia whilst the 1995 final against Ascoli saw Notts lift their third
trophy received from Wembley's Royal box, but this achievement was little
consolation in the latter stages of what was to be the first of many woeful
seasons around the turn of the millennium. Notts were relegated back down
to the 3rd tier, yet somehow prized out an opportunity - by way of another
play off final - for an immediate return to the upper divisions in 1996,
sadly this was to be easily Notts worst performance at the old Empire stadium,
Notts lost
2-0 to Bradford City which has since proved to be the Magpies' most
costly defeat ever, County are still yet to recover having sunk into administration
inbetween two miserable demotions to the 4th tier. During this unhappy
period, the old Wembley Stadium has been knocked down, re-built, and re-opened
again with a huge new arch replacing the former landmark twin towers. Notts
missed out on the chance of playing at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff
(where all finals, both cup and play off, had been played during the 6
seasons that Wembley was unavailable) but perhaps a return to England's
national stadium is a brighter prospect for the increasing numbers of Notts
fans too young to remember the glory days of the 1990's.
