Corrections, Notes
& Anomaly's

Attendances
Attendance figures often caused headaches when compiling the stats pages, for example - The Evening Post gave the Notts v Forest 1994 attendance figure as 18,655, yet other sources list it as 17,911. Minor differences in crowd figures appear to be very common before 2000.

Match by match league positions
Official Notts history books do not include match by match league positions, Rothman's football yearbooks do* but mostly list the position for matches played on a Saturday only (and the position they give is as it was on the Saturday evening - which in many cases was before the weekend programme had been completed). On this site I have decided to include Notts' league position as it stood on the Sunday evening (following a weekend fixture) or on a Thursday morning (following a mid-week game).

*The first edition of Rothman's Football Yearbook was published in 1970 (dated 1970/71 with stats for the previous campaign), the last Rothman's edition is dated 2002/03. The publication became known as Sky Sports Yearbook from 2003/04.

Individual match stat/reports pages
Where applicable, these pages can be accessed by clicking on the underlined date of matches listed on the season stats pages. From November 1982 until November 1987 I used to cut out "Match" weekly magazine stats for each game I attended and then stuck them in my programme. Where possible, I have referred to the "Match" cuttings for games played between those dates. From the Brentford home match in November 1987 I began cutting out the Nottingham Evening Post match reports and slipped those inside the programme instead (although I tended not to bother if we lost!). Many years later, in a moment of madness, I threw away a large proportion of my programme and football memorabilia collection during a house moving process (one of my great regrets in life) and so I have had to rely on Rothman's yearbooks for information on many matches, sadly these do not include goal and substitution times.

The Definitive Notts County
The Definitive Notts County by Keith Warsop and Tony Brown is the most recent official Notts history book. It was published in 2007 with information correct to the end of season 2006/07, it includes results, goalscorers, attendances and player appearance grids for all season's dating back to 1864/65 (when Notts first began playing against other teams rather than only playing amongst themselves.). Click on the book cover (left) for details and ordering information. There is also a web page that lists a handful of errors in the book and offers corrections.

Incorrect team line-up at home to Sunderland 1987/88
Both Rothman's football yearbook and the official Notts history books give an incorrect Notts team line-up for the home match v Sunderland on 31/10/2020, Darren Davis should be no.4 not David Kevan and Wayne Fairclough should be no.11 not David Thompson (who had actually left Notts by then!). The substitute details are also incorrect, Kevan was on the bench not Fairclough and neither Kevan or Lund came on. Therefore the total appearance figures for all of these players are also incorrect.

Two other anomalys between this site and the 1995 official history are repeated in the 2007 book, these are......
Jimmy McMorran (circa 1969/70) who, according to Neil Brown, joined Blackenall and not Halifax after departing from Notts (he may have had a trial there, but never played for them) and Mick Cartwright (1968/69) left for Dover according to Neil Brown not Rochdale.

Rothman's yearbooks also make several errors regards Notts away colours.

Anomaly's between this site and Tony Brown's 1995 official history book.
Tony Brown's "The Official history Notts County 1862-1995" (Pictured left) has the following mistakes which have all been corrected for the 2007 "Definitive Notts" volume.....

The December 1982 home crowd Vs Stoke City should be 11,591.

Scorers
The 1995 book lists the scorers at Blackpool in 1985/86 as "Clarke,Young,McParland", this should be "Young 2, Harkouk".
For the home game with Hull City on 15th December 1973, Masson should be listed as scoring from a penalty not Nixon.
The 2nd goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Luton Town on 15th April 1968 should be listed as a penalty for Jim Murphy.

Match dates
The 1995 edition has these incorrect match dates :- the 1970/71 League Cup tie at Aston Villa was actually played on Wednesday 19th August 1970, not the 17th. The 1969/70 away match at Port Vale was played on Saturday 18th April 1970, not the 16th, and the earlier home match with Newport County took place on Saturday 18th October 1969, not the 16th. Halifax away at the end of 1967/68 took place on Thursday 10th May, not the 11th.
The 1995 book also lists the 1979/80 home game with Preston North End as having taken place on November 1st, a Thursday (before the Cardiff away match), when in actual fact it was played on Saturday 10th November, a week after Cardiff (the attendance's and scorers for these games have also been muddled up in this book).

Player details
- as regards clubs moved on to.........
Steve Holder (1969/70) joined Corby Town.
Jim Murphy (1968/69) left for Motherwell not Raith.
John Elliot (1968/69) left for Kings Lynn.
Many other blanks have been filled on this site.
Thanks to Neil Brown for these player details corrections and other information relating to more recent obscurities.

Sequences
As the book was published in 1995, the records section is only correct to the end of 1994/95 season. It did however overlook the most games without an away win sequence that was beaten in 1993. Since 1995 a number of records have been broken, most notably in the disastrous 1996/97 season, and the triumphant 3rd Division championship season of 1997/98. See Record breakers.

When dealing with such masses of data, errors are bound to occur, so these points should in no way be taken as a criticism of Tony Brown's book and readers should note that the 1995 edition includes a history section and many squad photo's that were not included in the updated 2007 version.
