Best League Finish
Notts have twice finished 3rd in what would now be called the Premier League:- 1890/91 (This was only the 3rd season of League Football) and 1900/01.
The highest finish in living memory was 15th in the top flight for two season's running, the better points tally came in 1982/83.
Top of the Top Flight

Promotion

From the 2nd tier
As Champions
County have been crowned champions of the 2nd tier three times; 1896/97*, 1913/14 & 1922/23.
*Even though Notts won the league in 1896/97, they still had to take part in what were then called end of season "Test Matches" in which promotion and relegation issues were decided, Notts came top of a 4 team group to secure promotion to the top flight.
Automatic Promotion
Notts finished runners-up to gain promotion to the top flight during Jimmy Sirrel's 2nd spell as Manager in 1980/81.
Play Offs
County won their 2nd successive Play Off final at Wembley Stadium in 1990/91 under manager Neil Warnock to earn an incredible double promotion to the Top Flight.
Notts were unsuccessful in an end of season "Test Match" in both 1893/94 and 1894/95, but - as mentioned earlier - County won promotion via a "Test Match" group in 1896/97. Test matches were abolished for 1898/99 and it was not until 1986/87 that the Play Off's were introduced.
From the 3rd tier
As Champions
Notts were twice crowned champions of the 3rd Division South; 1930/31 & 1949/50, the latter being the highlight of the Tommy Lawton era with Meadow Lane crowds averaging over 35,000.
Automatic Promotion
Jimmy Sirrel's first spell in charge at Notts saw the Magpies snatch promotion on the final day of season 1972/73.
Play Offs
County won promotion in 1989/90 by winning their first ever Wembley final.
There have also been two unsuccessful play off campaigns at this level; Notts lost in a 3rd tier Semi-Final in 1987/88 and were losing 3rd tier finalists at Wembley in 1995/96.
From the 4th tier
As Champions
Notts have twice finished top of the 4th tier in record breaking style; Notts were unbeaten at home and won 30 of their 46 matches in 1970/71.
Notts won 10 consecutive league games (29 wins in 46 overall) during 1997/98, this championship provided Notts with their most recent major trophy.
Automatic Promotion
Notts were promoted from the League's basement division in 1959/60 as runners up.
Play Offs
Notts have yet to participate in the Play Offs at 4th tier level.

The FA Cup
Notts County won the FA Cup in 1893/94, County were the first League club below the top flight to lift the trophy (having been relegated to the 2nd tier the previous season) and they won it by beating Bolton Wanderers 4-1 at Goodison Park, Jimmy Logan scored a hat-trick. This was also the first time the FA Cup had been won by a professional club outside of the North West or West Midlands.
Notts had also reached the final in 1890/91 but lost 3-1 to Blackburn Rovers.
County last reached the Semi-Finals in 1921/22, since then Notts have reached the Quarter-Finals three times; 1954/55, 1983/84 and 1990/91.

The League Cup
Notts have never got further than the Quarter Finals which have been reached three times; 1963/64, 1972/73 and 1975/76.

Other Cup Competitions
Notts lifted the Anglo-Italian Cup at Wembley after beating Ascoli 2-1 in season 1994/95 having been unsuccessful finalists the season before.
The Anglo-Scottish Cup final was reached in 1980/81, this was a two leg home and away affair in which Notts met Chesterfield but County lost 2-1 on aggregate.
County were one step away from reaching the Associate Members Cup* final at Wembley in season's 1987/88 and 1989/90.
*Now referred to as The Football League Trophy but more commonly known by whoever happens to be sponsoring it.

Notts Record Result
15-0 v Rotherham Town in a 1st Round FA Cup tie at Trent Bridge on 24th October 1885, Notts record League victory is 11-1 v Newport County at Meadow Lane in Division Three(South) on 15th January 1949.
The last time the Magpies managed to score 8 goals in a match was way back in October 1961 when they won 8-1 against Newport County.
Notts last notched up 7 goals in an FA Cup 1st Round 7-2 victory over Shildon on November 9th 2003.
In the League, Notts haven't managed to notch up more than 5 goals since they beat Southend Utd 6-2 in September 1987.
Notts greatest victory in a Friendly match appears to be the 15-1 victory at Newquay on 26th July 2002.
The record victory in England is held by Preston North End who beat Hyde Utd 26-0 in an FA Cup tie in 1887, the record English League victory is 13-0 which has occurred twice, most recently in 1946 when Newcastle United beat Newport County. Arbroath beat Bon Accord 36-0 in a Scottish Cup match in 1885.
Notts Most Surprising Victory
In terms of the status of the opposition, Notts most startling win has to be the 1-0 victory at Aston Villa at the beginning of season 1981/82, Villa were the reigning Top Flight Champions who would go on to win the European Cup that season. Notts also won the return match by the same score at Meadow Lane.

Notts Shame
Notts Worst League Finish
Notts have twice finished 21st in the 4th tier in season's 2005/06 and 2007/08. County needed a victory on the final day of the 2005/06 season to guarantee their Football League status, Notts only managed a draw with Bury but stayed up by virtue of favourable results elsewhere. Two years later Notts again finished 21st with less points, but on this occasion safety was secured with one fixture still remaining.
Bottom of the 4th tier
Notts were last seen at the foot of the 4th tier after 9 games of 2004/05, Gary Mills was the manager at the time and was sacked soon afterwards.
Prior to that, Notts had last occupied rock bottom spot in late September/early October of 1968/69 and it was during those few weeks that Jack Dunnett took over as Chairman of the club.

Relegation
Notts have been relegated 15 times in all.
From the Top flight
County have surrendered their place amongst the elite on 6 occasions; 1892/93*, 1912/13, 1919/20, 1925/26, 1983/84 and 1991/92
*In 1892/93 (the first season in which clubs would be relegated to the newly created 2nd tier) Notts lost their top flight status after losing an end of season "Test Match".
From the 2nd tier
Notts have dropped into the lower leagues on 5 occasions; 1929/30, 1934/35, 1957/58, 1984/85 and 1994/95.
From the 3rd tier
Notts have been relegated to the basement division 4 times; 1958/59, 1963/64, 1996/97 and 2003/04.

Heaviest Notts defeat
9-1 on three occasions:-at Aston Villa in only Notts 3rd ever League game on 29th September 1888, at Blackburn Rovers (also in a League match) on 16th November 1889 and at Portsmouth in Division Two on 9th April 1927.
More recently Notts have suffered two 7-1 defeats and both were in the League Cup; at home to Newcastle United on 5th September 1993 and at Manchester City on 19th August 1998.
Most Embarrassing Defeat
Notts have been knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league clubs on more occasions than anybody should care to remember, the most recent of these (and arguably the worst of the lot) was a 2nd round 1-0 defeat at home to Havant & Waterlooville on 1st December 2007*.
*Notts were 19th in the 4th tier whilst non-league Havant & Waterlooville were two divisions below in 11th at the time.

The all time League record is 14 last achieved by Preston North End in season 1950/51.

Longest unbeaten run - 19 in 1930 - the Tom Keetley era, the run began with the final match of 1929/30 (a home draw with Oldham Athletic) and lasted into the December of 1930/31 (with defeat at Southend United). The run swells to 21 if you include cup ties. Notts also set a record scoring sequence during this season (see Consecutive games scored).

Most home wins on the bounce - 14 during season 1959/60 in which Notts were promoted from the 4th tier as runners-up.

Most home games unbeaten - 25 during Jimmy Sirrel's first spell as Manager, the run included the whole of the 1970/71 season plus the last game of 1969/70 and the first of 1971/72.

Consecutive games scored - 35 this has occurred twice:- most recently the final 32 matches of 1959/60 plus the first 3 of 1960/61. Perhaps the record should solely be credited to Notts of 1930/31 as this run can be topped up with 4 FA Cup ties making a total of 39, the sequence began on the final day of the 1929/30 season and ended 11 months later with a goalless draw at Northampton Town, Tom Keetley scored in 22 of these matches including 4 hat-tricks.

The Bad
Most defeats on the bounce - 7 this has happened three times, most recently early in the top flight 1983/84 relegation season.

Most games without a win - 20 in what must rank, purely in terms of results, as Notts worst ever season 1996/97, Notts duly finished bottom of the 3rd tier with Manager Colin Murphy sacked in the December.
Cambridge United went 31 matches without a win in season 1983/84.

Most home games without a win - 13 this has happened twice, most recently the last 13 home matches of season 1979/80.

Most games without scoring - 5 The last time this occurred was during the 1984/85 2nd tier relegation season (although 4 of these matches were goalless draws).

Draws
Successive draws - 5 this last happened in 2007 beginning with the last match of season 2006/07 and then the first 4 games of 2007/08, but this run breaks down if you include a cup tie defeat. Notts drew 5 successive League games in the December of 1978/79 and this run was not interrupted by cup matches.

Successive goalless draws - 3 this last happened in 1984/85.

Most games without a draw - 22 this record has occurred twice, most recently in season 1959/60.

Notts record Goal scorers

Les Bradd scored 124 (or 125 depending on which book you choose to refer to!) league goals and a further 12 Cup goals for Notts having joined from Rotherham United in October 1967 and eventually leaving for Stockport County in the summer of 1978.

Tom Keetley (pictured left) is Notts' highest league scorer in a single season scoring 39 league goals in 1930/31, in terms of appearances Keetley was also Notts most prolific scorer averaging 0.91 goals a game and holds the Notts record for the most hat-tricks, 10.

Harry Cursham notched up 48 (or is it 49?!) FA Cup goals in the 1880s, an all time record for any player regardless of club. He scored 6 times in the 11-1 replay at Wednesbury Strollers on 10th December 1881.

3 different players have managed to score 5 goals for Notts in a single league match but this hasn't happened since 1927 when Bertie Mills netted 5 times in a 9-0 victory over Barnsley. The most recent player to score 4 goals for Notts in a competitive match was Paul Heffernan on 21st February 2004 in a 4-1 win over Stockport County.

Special mentions for Barrie Jones who scored the fastest Notts goal on record;  just 6 seconds after kick-off in a 2-0 win at home to Torquay Utd on March 31st 1962.... Ian Scanlon who scored a hat-trick in the space of 2 minutes and 45 seconds at home to Sheffield Wednesday in a 3-3 draw on 16th November 1974.... and Tommy Johnson who scored in both of Notts successful play off finals on 27th May 1990 and 2nd June 1991, Johnson netted twice in the latter to become the hero of a double promotion to the top flight.

Attendance's

Best
At Meadow Lane, 47,310 saw Notts lose 1-0 to York City in an FA Cup Quarter Final on 12th March 1955.
The highest League crowd at the Lane was 46,000 for the visit of Nottingham Forest on April 22nd 1950 - Jackie Sewell and Tommy Lawton were the scorers in a 2-0 win for Notts that secured promotion to the 2nd tier.
Since the re-building of Meadow Lane was completed in the summer of 1994, the best attendance is 16,952 for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup 3rd Round on 26th October 1994, County won 3-0.
The best ever home average attendance is 35,176 for the Division Three South championship season of 1949/50.

Worst
The lowest gate for a Notts home match is hard to pinpoint as only estimates were made before 1925, since that time the lowest Meadow Lane League crowd is 1,927 for Notts v Chesterfield in Division Four on February 11th 1967.
In cup competitions just 900 witnessed a Football League Trophy cup tie at home to Leyton Orient on 3rd September 2007.
The lowest average home attendance recorded since 1925 is 4,258 for season 1996/97 (this being a calamitous relegation to the 4th tier).
